Sights: Staraya Ladoga is located on the picturesque bank of the r. Volkhov, one of the largest rivers of the Leningrad region. Old Ladoga is a concentration of cultural, historical, archaeological, spiritual monuments that everyone should visit. The main attraction is the Staraya Ladoga fortress - one of the oldest fortresses in the region. Now on the territory of the fortress there is a historical-architectural and archaeological museum-reserve. On the territory of the Ladoga Fortress there is a monument of world culture  St. George's Church, which is a typical 12th century ancient Russian church with a helmet head. The temple is famous for its unique paintings, miraculously preserved from ancient times. The main value of the church of St. George  wall murals, the most interesting among them is considered to be "St. George, taming the serpent." Southwest of the church of sv. George is a wooden church of St. Dmitry Solunsky. This saint, like George, was considered the patron saint of warriors. First church of sv. Dmitry Solunsky was mentioned in the document of 1646, but it was probably built during the period of the restoration of Ladoga after the enemy invasions of the Time of Troubles. Despite all the restoration work, the building has retained its original appearance and consists of a vestibule, a refectory and the church itself, united into one solemn whole. Buildings like the church of sv. Dmitry Solunsky, a little preserved, the more valuable this building is now one of the rarest in Northern Russia. There are two functioning monasteries in Staraya Ladoga. Staraya Ladoga Holy Assumption Maiden Monastery is one of the oldest monasteries in northwest Russia. On its territory there is a temple of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin of the XII century with preserved frescoes. In the XVIII century was the place of imprisonment of the first wife of Peter I - Evdokia Lopukhina. Nikolsky Monastery - a monument of Russian military glory. The monastery was founded by Prince Alexander Nevsky in 1240 after the Battle of the Neva with the Swedes. The monastic chronicle indicates that the monastery was erected in memory of comrades of the commander. After the battle, they were brought to Ladoga and piously buried on a hill, later named “Victory”.
